Caribbean Medical Mission Serves Those in Need
The Caribbean Medical Mission (CMM) is a group of dedicated medical professionals who venture to the Caribbean each year to bring healthcare to the residents of the islands. The CMM was founded in 1996 by a group of six physicians and three nurses. This non-profit, volunteer organization treats the under-privileged people of the Caribbean.
We are very proud to share that our own Dr. Winston Scott serves as president of this hard-working medical mission. Dr. Scott provides care for the patients’ vision needs. On the most recent trip to Guyana, the eye team examined and treated over 900 patients during their one-week stay. Other medical specialties represented in this group include experts in the fields of cardiology, gynecology, dentistry and family practice.
The Impact of the CMM
These pictures help to tell about the life-changing effect that this mission has on the residents of the islands. Providing a pair of reading glasses can improve a person’s ability to care for themselves and their family.
Over the years, this group has distributed millions of dollars in medication, medical equipment, beds, eyeglasses, computers, books, and clothing to the people of the Caribbean.
Dr. Scott, who was born in Jamaica, shares that during the past ten years alone, the CMM members have provided medical care to over 20,000 patients in Jamaica. They have also cared for an additional 25,000 patients in other Caribbean countries.
The Team Approach
The Caribbean Medical Mission works alongside local doctors, bringing specialists to help care for the needs of patients in their communities. Among the medical team members in 2015 were doctors, nurses and administrators from the U.S., Guyana, Jamaica, Haiti and Africa.
The Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller, praised their efforts following their visit to her country. Her comments from an article in the Jamaica Observer illustrates her thoughts.
“The drive by the mission to provide medical care to the needy in the Caribbean over the past 17 years is a contribution which serves as a lifeline to the health sector in Jamaica. The Government and people of the country consider the mission as a true friend of Jamaica and a valued partner in our developmental journey.”
She is not alone in her thanks to these volunteers. We extend our gratitude and wish them well in their continued efforts to bring healthcare to those in need! We would also like to thank the many people who support this mission with fundraising and with donations of needed items.
